Marie-Odile Rousset (CNRS – Archéorient), "The medieval occupation of the tells of Iraqi Kurdistan : excavations at Girdi Qala (Qara Dagh)"

In spite of the developments of archaeology in the Kurdistan region over the last ten years, the South of Kurdistan remains poorly documented whatever the period considered. However, it constitutes an ideal laboratory for the study of human settlements in regions of margins, in this case those of the mountains of Kurdistan. Girdi Qala is located on one of the main routes into the mountain range that separates the Mesopotamian plain from the Iranian plateau. The scientific programme conducted since 2015 under the direction of Régis Vallet (CNRS, ArScAn) focuses on the formation of complex societies, the emergence of territorial policies and intercultural processes over the long term (Formation des entités territoriales et échanges interculturels en Mésopotamie centrale, programme financed by the MAEDI, IFPO, CNRS and Universities of Liège and Paris 1, in collaboration with the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle of Paris, the UMR 7041 ArScAn-VEPMO, the UMR 5133 Archéorient, University Roma La Sapienza and University Sorbonne Abu Dhabi). The project is more specifically focused on the Chalcolithic and Bronze Age but, from the first mission, late-period levels have appeared. This paper will present a synthesis of the elements allowing the reconstruction of the medieval occupation of Girdi Qala, for the most part resulting from a field mission carried out in 2019.
